Nashik is famed as the wine capital of India. It is a busy bustling city with a population in excess of 1.5 million and is said to be the abode of Lord Rama during his 14 years in exile. The first wineries were developed in this region and today approximately 35,000 hectares of land is cultivated for wine production. The soils are volcanic in origin composed of continental flood basalt mixed with some clay which add their own character to the wine.
The heat and humidity of Indian wine regions allow many viticulture choices. India’s vineyards range from the north western Punjab state where the climate is somewhat more temperate right down to Tamil Nadu in the south of the country. As well as Maharashtra, the major wine producing regions of India are found in Karnatake and Telangana.
