BRINGING AMAZING WINE FROM HEROIC, SUSTAINABLE SMALL GROWERS FROM AROUND THE WINE WORLD, £5.95 SHIPPING UK WIDE ON WINES
Vines have been grown in England since Roman times for winemaking. The Doomsday book refers to over 42 vineyards in Southern England at the end of the 11th Century and there are now more than 500 vineyards in England and Wales producing still and sparkling wines. In recent years, English sparkling wines have secured growing worldwide recognition, winning some of the most cherished awards and trophies in international competitions. Geological mapping proves that the chalky sub-strata of the South Downs is identical to that of the best Chardonnay vineyards in Champagne.
England is truly experiencing a renaissance. Over the last ten years, the number of vines planted has more than doubled and is expected to do so again by 2020. Each year more wineries pop up and new producers are getting into the game to help meet the growing demand for English bubbly. Will England one day be the new Champagne? It depends who you ask. England is still developing as a winemaking country, but it will undoubtedly be exciting to see what English wine will become in the years to come.
